Understanding File Sizes
In the digital world, data is stored in bits and bytes. Understanding these units is crucial for managing storage and bandwidth.
Common Units:
- Bit (b): The smallest unit of data (0 or 1).
- Byte (B): 8 bits. Usually stores one character of text.
- Kilobyte (KB): 1,024 Bytes. Small text files or low-res images.
- Megabyte (MB): 1,024 KB. MP3 songs (3-5 MB) or photos.
- Gigabyte (GB): 1,024 MB. HD movies (1-4 GB) or modern games.
- Terabyte (TB): 1,024 GB. Hard drives and cloud storage.
Mbps vs MB/s
Internet speeds are advertised in Megabits per second (Mbps), while file downloads are shown in Megabytes per second (MB/s).
Since 1 Byte = 8 bits, you need to divide your internet speed by 8 to get your actual download speed.
Example: 100 Mbps connection = 12.5 MB/s max download speed.
